What’s better than free live music? Not much—although getting drunk to help kids might be close. Local bars and spirit makers sponsored a week in Seattle known as “A Drink for the Kids.” On certain nights, participating establishments donated a portion of their sales to The Vera Project, an all ages music venue in Seattle. The week culminated in a music extravaganza at Neumos on Saturday, October 11. New Zealand’s The Ruby Suns opened up with Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band playing second before headliner Tokyo Police Club. Julie won a couple of tickets from The Stranger and took me along. I, of course, invited the Nikon and a few lenses. Fleet Foxes and Goats

The Fleet Foxes are incredibly good. Like disgustingly, filthy good. I mean that literally and figuratively. I caught the Fleet Foxes on Saturday at the Capitol Hill Block Party. They played during that space in the day where you are not sure if it’s late afternoon or early evening. That ambiguous hour complimented their timeless sound well. Listening to the Fleet Foxes feels like the first time you figured out how to use your dad’s record player and dug into some Beatles or Simon and Garfunkel. Even though the Fleet Foxes sound like everything you’ve ever heard, their music rings with an urgency and newness that is unmistakably born of this generation.

U.S.E. at CHBP 2008

Two months ago it was not raining in Seattle. Another one of Seattle’s delightful cliches happened to be center stage: music. The annual Capitol Hill Block Party took over the intersection of Pike & Broadway during the last weekend in July. I, with camera in hand, hit the two day festival with Sharat (among others). In addition to a great lineup, the weekend was sufficiently stocked with hipsters, hipster altercations (the now infamous Peter-chair incident), Girl Talk nonsense, and PBR.

Although CHBP 2k8 reviews are hardly newsworthy now that we are in September; I always planned on posting some of the 1,600 pictures I made during the weekend. Look for write-ups featuring the Fleet Foxes, Devotchka, Girl Talk, Vampire Weekend and a few others.

The Dodos

San Fransisco’s The Dodos descended on Neumos late last month. Sharat, Julie and I met up in Capitol Hill to catch the show. For several days prior to the concert I had been blasting Visiter in the Explorer. “Walking,” “Red and Purple,” and “Jodi” had become fast favorites. Although I got pretty rowdy playing drums along to The Dodos on my Ford-logo’ed steering wheel (no disrespect, Alan), I had no idea what I was in for at Neumos.

Everyone I Know Is Listening to Crunk

Last Tuesday, Sharat and I ventured out to Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood to see Lightspeed Champion at Chop Suey. This was my first time at the Asian inspired club. Originally I became aware of this concert because The Explorers Club were supposed to be on the bill. The Explorers Club are band from Charleston, South Carolina that has been on my radar for a few years. Since they basically sound like Pet Sounds, I was very eager to hear them perform live. While checking MySpace at work (let’s say it was on my lunch break) I saw that the band posted a bulletin with some dire news.

On Saturday night Julie invited several of us to High Dive in Fremont to check out her friend’s band, Joy Wants Eternity. Unfortunately, I did not make it to High Dive early enough to hear them, but I did catch the last two bands on the bill: The Jealous Girlfriends and Sea Wolf.

U District Street Fair

by on Jun.01, 2008, under Music, Seattle, U-District

On Sunday, May 18, 2008, Ryan and I walked to the U District neighborhood near the University of Washington. The annual U District Street Fair was taking on place on “The Ave;” it occurred to me that this would be a great opportunity to do some people watching so I brought along the D300. I’ve left out the usual camera/exposure information I normally publish on this blog. Every single image here was made in Program Exposure mode on my Nikon D300 with the 18-200mm VR lens. I used a lot of automatic settings so I could quickly grab snapshots on the fly—turning this big DSLR into a fancy point-n-shoot.
