“Get yo’ wig split”
by Andy on Aug.02, 2008, under Ballard, Seattle
I have never known an individual as dedicated to complete nonsense as Alex Chu. “Obnoxious” is a term frequently deployed by Alex to describe the scenery around him; although his use of it is rather ironic. Forever on the cutting edge, Alex was among the early adopters of the iPhone. For a brief period of time, every email Alex sent from this device contained a signature block that read: “Sent from Alex Chu’s obnoxious iPhone.” Well said.

Alex and Josh visited Seattle earlier this July. From the moment I greeted Alex in the airport I could tell his lexicon was brimming with hilarious/irrelevant words and phrases. Throughout the weekend, moments of silence were quickly chased away with a “duck butter,” “you’re doing it, Aupperlee” or “get yo’ wig split.” What do these words mean? Doesn’t matter. They are rarely used in any relevant context; the literal meaning is not the point. If Ornette Coleman‘s saxophone could speak the English language, it would probably sound a little like Alex.

Getting the gang back together and hanging out with Josh and Alex is always fun, if not exhausting. Several days before taking a flight from LA to Seattle, Alex told me all he wanted to do was “eat at some nice restaurants and get drunk one night.” We certainly took care of the latter, and we powered through meals at Chiso, Cactus (on Alki Beach), The Rusty Pelican, The Five Spot, and The Eastlake Bar & Grill. After all of this we decided to take it easy on Sunday afternoon and meet up with Julie at Golden Gardens. We loaded the Explorer with food, blankets, and chairs; stopped at the Wallingford QFC to stock up on Coors; and headed west.

Josh has always been able to get people connected across the country (and even the globe). If he says he’s buying a plane ticket, you can take it to the bank that a dude with curly hair, some kind of technical jacket and a backpack will be showing up at your local airport. Although he’s no less inspired than Mr. Chu, he’s the perfect counterbalance to Alex. Even if we are fifty or sixty “that’s a real face melter”‘s deep, Josh can still find something to talk about. In fact, I think you guys should write a script. Josh can develop the characters. Alex can shoot it. And I’ll blog about the whole damn thing. (Of course Don can pap it.)

Sharat allegedly told Alex and Josh that he “drinks Andy’s friends under the table.” Adding, “that’s what I do.” He probably does; it’s just that I’ve never witnessed it because I’m usually already in bed. He understands better than anyone that having to carry back a cooler half full of unopened beers is ridiculous. It basically never happens when he comes to the beach with me.

You forgot to mention the half naked Brazilian dancers that were on the beach, or was that a different day?..
